At the recent SMX West conference, Google’s Matt Cutts confirmed the growing importance of authorship as a way to validate content on the internet. Though there haven’t been many conclusive studies done about the effects of Authorship on ranks, we do know that Authorship is already enhancing search results and increasing CTRs. Studies done by SEOmoz and Search Engine Land provide definitive proof that Google Authorship can and will lead to more traffic to your website. Below, we detail the 5 step process for implementing Authorship for your website or blog in just a few minutes.
Step 1: Create a Google+ profile for your blog author
Go to plus.google.com.
Step 2: Create an alternate email address
Create an alternate email address for your profile using an email with the same domain as your website. Make sure to click on the verification email that is sent from Google.
Click on profile picture in top right > Account > Settings
Step 3: Add your blog URL
Add your blog URL in the “Contributor To” section of your Google+ profile.
Profile > About > Links > Edit
Step 4: Include a link
For Google to make the connection between your article and your profile, you need to include a link to your Google+ profile in your blog post. First, copy the URL of your Google+ profile. Then, insert the URL into this code:
<a href=”https://plus.google.com/106981657358762658243?rel=author”>Paul Taylor, Founder & CEO</a>
Note: The highlighted portions will be unique to each blog author. Finally, take this code and include it in the “Bio” section of the article.
Step 5: Verify your authorship
Verify that authorship is working. First, log in to your new account and enter your same-domain email address here: https://plus.google.com/authorship. Next, visit http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets and paste in the URL of your blog post. You should get a message that says “Authorship is working for this webpage.”
